How Octordle works
Octordle is a bigger sibling of Wordle: instead of one word you guess 8 five-letter words simultaneously, each on its own grid, sharing the same 13 guesses. Every letter you type lands on all 8 boards at once — green for a correct letter in the right spot, yellow for a right letter in the wrong spot — so a single strong guess gives you information on every board. It runs several modes:
| Mode | What's different |
|---|---|
| Classic | The standard daily game — eight boards, thirteen guesses, feedback after each guess. |
| Chill | A gentler ruleset for a relaxed solve of all eight boards. |
| Extreme | A harder variant for players who want less help. |
| Sequence | Solve the eight words one at a time instead of simultaneously. |
| Rescue | Begin with several computer guesses already placed and finish the boards. |
Mode-by-mode strategy
- With eight boards and only thirteen guesses, your first three words should burn through as much of the alphabet as possible — think SLATE, CRONY, DUMPH-style coverage before you start closing boards.
- Close the board you're most sure of early; every solved word frees mental space and its letters are shared clues for the seven that remain.
- Track which boards a letter is green on — with eight grids it's easy to place a correct letter on the wrong board.
- Leave the hardest one or two boards for last and use elimination: by then you'll know most of the letters that AREN'T in them.
- In Rescue mode, read what the computer's starting guesses already revealed before spending your own — you often begin closer to solved than you think.
What is Octordle?
Octordle is published by Merriam-Webster — yes, the dictionary — which took over the game and folded it into its daily puzzle lineup alongside its sister game Quordle. (Wordle itself is the New York Times original that inspired the whole genre.) It's free to play in any browser at Merriam-Webster Octordle, resets once a day, and has built a loyal following among players who find a single Wordle board too quick. This page publishes each day's per-word hints and full answers across every mode as soon as the puzzle goes live, so you can get exactly as much help as you want.
