Looking for today's 4 Little Words answers? Every solution for Sunday, August 9, 2026 is below — all ten daily puzzles, four clues each, 40 answers in total — with the letter count for every word so you can take a nudge instead of the whole board.
4 Little Words is Blue Ox's compact clue-and-tile game: ten letter tiles, four clues, and every tile used exactly once. That last rule is what makes one stuck clue so frustrating, because a single wrong tile placement quietly breaks the other three words too. Tap any clue below for its own page with the tile breakdown, or reveal the full set here.

How 4 Little Words works
| Rule | Detail |
|---|---|
| Goal | Spell four mystery words per puzzle by combining letter tiles — one word per clue. |
| Ten tiles | Each puzzle has exactly ten tiles of two to four letters, and every tile is used once across the four answers. Nothing is left over. |
| Letter counts | Every clue shows how many letters its answer has. Answers run about four to ten letters, built from two to four tiles. |
| Any order | There's no timer and no penalty for guessing. Solve the clues in whatever order you like and rearrange tiles freely. |
| Ten a day | Blue Ox publishes ten puzzles daily — 40 answers in total — resetting at midnight Eastern Time. |
Tips for solving 4 Little Words
- Solve three, get the fourth free. Ten tiles cover exactly four answers with none left over, so once three words are locked in, the leftover tiles are the last answer — you can often assemble it without ever working out the clue.
- Go by letter count, not clue order. The shortest answer is usually just two tiles, which is a handful of combinations to eyeball versus dozens for a nine- or ten-letter word.
- Read the tiles as word parts. Fragments like RE, UN, ING, TION and ER are almost always prefixes or suffixes, so you can guess where a tile sits in a word before you know the word.
- Only ten tiles means you can brute-force the endings. Scan the bank for tiles that could plausibly finish a word of the right length and work backwards from there.
- When two clues could take the same tile, solve the more specific one first — proper nouns and single-answer trivia clues are far less flexible than a general definition.
- Stuck on just one word? Open its clue page for a letter-by-letter reveal, so you can uncover a couple of letters without spoiling the other three answers.
What is 4 Little Words?
4 Little Words is a daily word puzzle from Blue Ox Family Games, the Maine studio that has been running 7 Little Words since 2011 and also makes Red Herring, Monkey Wrench and Tiny Little Crosswords. Each board gives you four clues and ten letter tiles of two to four letters; you spell every answer by combining tiles, and each tile is used exactly once, so a finished puzzle leaves nothing behind.
It's the four-clue format of the same idea that made 7 Little Words popular — quicker, but not automatically easier, because a smaller tile bank means each tile carries more weight. Ten puzzles publish every day, edited by Joe Jordan, which adds up to 40 answers daily and plenty of chances for one clue to stall you.
4 Little Words vs. 7 Little Words
Same tile mechanic, different shape. If you've played 7 Little Words, here's what changes:
| 4 Little Words | 7 Little Words | |
|---|---|---|
| Clues per puzzle | 4 | 7 |
| Tiles per puzzle | 10 | 20 |
| Puzzles per day | 10 | 5 |
| Typical solve | A minute or two | Five to ten minutes |
| Reset | Midnight Eastern | Midnight Eastern |
Play both? We cover the longer game too — today's 7 Little Words answers are updated at the same midnight reset.
