How to use the Wordle solver

You don't need to fill in every box — even one or two known letters will narrow the list dramatically. Here's how it works:

1. Enter your green letters. These are letters in the correct position. Put each one in the slot where Wordle showed it green (for example, an “R” in the third box).
2. Add your yellow letters. These letters are in the answer but in the wrong spot. Type them into the misplaced letters boxes — or on mobile, tap a letter on the on-screen keyboard twice to turn it yellow.
3. Add your grey letters. These letters aren't in the word at all. Type them into the exclude letters boxes — or on mobile, tap a letter once to mark it grey. A third tap resets the letter.
4. Read your results. The solver instantly lists every remaining word that matches your clues, ranked so the strongest next guesses come first. Play one, update the boxes with your new clues, and the list narrows further.

By your third or fourth guess, the list usually shrinks to just a handful of options — often a single answer.

Understanding Wordle's colour clues

Every guess in Wordle returns colour-coded feedback, and the solver is only as good as the clues you feed it. Here's what each colour means:

The more clues you enter, the tighter the result list. A single green letter plus two greys can cut hundreds of possibilities down to a few dozen.

The best Wordle starting words

Your opening guess is the most important move of the game — it's the one time you have zero information, so the goal is to gather as much as possible. The strongest openers use five distinct, high-frequency letters in the positions they're most likely to appear:

• SLATE — widely rated the single best opener; it tests five common letters with no repeats.
• CRANE and TRACE — close behind, balancing common vowels with high-value consonants.
• CRATE and CARTE — strong alternatives built on the same principle.

It's tempting to open with a vowel-heavy word like AUDIO or ADIEU, but those actually perform worse on average. Loading up on vowels means sacrificing common consonants like S, T, R, and N — the letters that do the most work narrowing down the answer.

Wordle strategy: solve in fewer guesses

A solver gets you unstuck, but a few habits will improve your raw solving and protect your streak:

• Spend your first two guesses gathering letters, not chasing the answer. Test ten different common letters across your opening pair before you commit.
• Don't reuse grey letters. It sounds obvious, but under pressure it's the most common mistake.
• Watch for double letters. Words like ABBEY or MAMMA trip people up because the solver and your brain both tend to assume five unique letters.
• Mind the position of yellows. A yellow letter rules out the exact slot it appeared in — use that, don't just remember the letter.
• Save risky letters for last. If two answers differ only by one letter, make sure your guess actually tests the difference.

Wordle hard mode tips

In hard mode, every green and yellow letter you've found must be used in all of your following guesses. That removes your ability to play a free “exploration” word, so your candidate pool matters more. CLASP is a strong hard-mode opener — it sets up an efficient path while still respecting the constraint. When you're locked in by confirmed letters, the solver becomes especially useful, since it only ever shows words that satisfy every clue you've entered.

How big is the Wordle word list?

Wordle isn't drawing from every five-letter word in English. The game's creator and his partner hand-curated the answer list down to common, familiar words — avoiding obscure terms, most proper nouns, and plurals ending in S. In total there are 2,315 possible answers and a further 10,657 words accepted as valid guesses but never used as solutions, for a full dictionary of 12,972 words. That's why the solver only ever suggests real, playable words — it's matching against the same list the game uses.

When should you use a Wordle solver?

There's no wrong way to enjoy Wordle, but most people reach for a solver in one of two moments. The first is being genuinely stuck — several letters confirmed, guesses running low, and no word surfacing. The solver shows your remaining options so you can make an informed choice instead of a blind guess and keep your streak alive. The second is learning: running the solver after you finish and comparing its path to yours is one of the fastest ways to get better, because you see which words you could have played to narrow things down sooner.
