How to Play Connections

Simple Step by Step Guide

1Study the 16-Word Grid

yellow
apple
pear
plum
kiwi
king

Each puzzle presents sixteen words on a four-by-four grid. Your job is to find four groups of four words that share a hidden connection — it could be a category, theme, wordplay, or something more abstract.

TIP — Scan for obvious pairs first. Look for synonyms, types of things, or words that fit a single category before committing to a guess.

2Select Four Words and Submit

Tap up to four words to select them, then submit your guess. If you're correct, those words are removed and replaced by a colored category bar showing the group name.

TIP — Try our Connections Play mode to practice finding groups on today's puzzle.

3Understand the Difficulty Colors

Yellow — easiest
fish, crab, whale, seal
Green — moderate
red, blue, green, yellow
Blue — tricky
apple, pear, plum, kiwi
Purple — hardest
king, queen, jack, ace

Yellow — the most straightforward group.

Green — a bit trickier, but still fairly obvious.

Blue — requires more creative thinking.

Purple — the hardest group, often involving wordplay or obscure connections.
