5 Letter Words
Five-letter words are the heart of Wordle, and they carry real weight in Scrabble and Words With Friends too. Whether you're hunting for a strong opening guess, a word that fits the green and yellow letters you've already found, or a high-scoring play, the sorted list above has it — and the strategy below helps you choose well.
Choosing a Wordle starting word
A strong Wordle opener tests common letters and spreads vowels. ADIEU and AUDIO front-load the vowels; RAISE, SLATE, CRANE and STARE mix frequent consonants with two vowels for maximum information. Whichever you pick, follow it with a second guess made of five brand-new letters to rule out as much of the alphabet as possible.
Fitting the letters you've found
Once you've got greens and yellows, narrow the field fast. Use our Wordle Solver to turn known letters into a shortlist, or grab a spoiler-free nudge from today's Wordle hint. To browse by pattern, try five-letter words starting with RA or ending with ER.
A worked example
A worked rack shows the real skill. Say you hold S, C, O, W, S, A, T. You could hook SCOW (9 points) onto the board and keep S, A, T — three superb bingo letters — in your rack. Playing the *second* S for two extra points would be a mistake: you'd trade a bingo setup for a rounding error. That trade-off — rack balance over raw score — is what separates strong five-letter play from weak. For reference, there are just under 9,000 valid five-letter words in the Scrabble dictionary, so the list above is your complete map.
5-letter words worth knowing
Here are a few five-letter words that punch above their weight:
- ADIEU — four vowels in one guess — a classic Wordle opener.
- RAISE — tests five of the most common letters at once.
- SLATE — a top-rated Wordle starter by letter frequency.
- CRANE — another elite opener favoured by solvers.
- AUDIO — clears four vowels early to lock down the tricky ones.
