6 Letter Words
Six-letter words are prime Scrabble and Words With Friends territory: long enough to rack up serious points and reach premium squares, but common enough that you'll spot them on most racks. The list above is sorted by score; the notes below help you turn six tiles into a board-changing play.
Reaching premium squares
The advantage of a 6 letter word is reach. From the right spot it can stretch across a double- or triple-word score, multiplying the whole play. Prioritise words that carry a high-value tile (QUARTZ, ZEPHYR, JOCKEY) onto a bonus square rather than simply playing the longest word you can find.
Building toward a bingo
If you can play six of your seven tiles and keep a useful letter back, you set up a bingo — a seven-tile play worth a 50-point bonus — on your next turn. Learning common six-letter stems helps you see those big plays before they arrive.
A worked example
Concrete target: QUARTZ scores 24 points and ZEPHYR scores 23, both before any premium square. Land one across a double-word score and the whole play doubles — which is why reaching a bonus tile matters more than simply playing your longest word.
6-letter words worth knowing
Here are a few six-letter words that punch above their weight:
- QUARTZ — a Q, Z and premium-square potential in one word.
- ZEPHYR — a light wind — a Z and a Y for a heavy score.
- JOCKEY — packs a J and a K into a common shape.
- SQUAWK — offloads Q, W and K together.
- FROZEN — clears a Z while staying easy to place.
